- college consulting with Elizabeth Hamblet
With more than ten years in disability services at the college level, and several published works on transition, Elizabeth Hamblet, a state-certified learning disabilities consultant, is now offering personalized consulting to students with learning disabilities or ADD and their families.
- With her help, students can:
- make sure that their documentation meets the guidelines at the colleges of their choice; investigate disability services at the colleges they are considering to decide which might provide their desired accommodations;
- understand how to apply for accommodations at college and understand what services might be available
- compost a list of accommodations to request based on their learning needs and learn to connect them to desired accommodations
Having worked at both the high school and the college level, Elizabeth Hamblet can help students with disabilities make a smooth transition to the college environment.
When should students seek a consultation? Any time after they have composed a list of potential colleges with an experienced college counselor but before they make a final decision based on his college acceptances.
What is included in a two-hour consulting appointment?
Review of all of students' reports, plans, and testing before the meeting to prepare for the discussion of history and diagnosis with them.
- Two hours of time to:
- go over testing and documentation with them to make sure they can articulate their learning issues and accommodation needs, something they may be expected to do when requesting accommodations at college;
- discuss what accommodations have been helpful in the past (or not) and plan what accommodations they will request at college. Conversation will address reality of expectations colleges have for students and what accommodations might not be offered (and possible alternatives for the student to help herself). Students will leave with a list of suggested accommodations to request and, where indicated, a list of skills to develop and/or technological aids to consider;
- research disability services and documentation requirements for at least two colleges from your students' list (more if time allows) and check students' paperwork to see if it meets the requirements. If it doesn't, students' will receive detailed instructions to help get the additional information needed;
- research and create a list of other sources of academic assistance available at a minimum of two target colleges (more if time allows).
At the end of the appointment, students will also receive charts to help them continue their college disability services research at home.
If students want more assistance after the initial consultation, additional appointments can be arranged on an hourly basis.
Consultation on any of these topics is also available on an hourly basis.
